An alternative medicine is a medicine that is not prescribed by a doctor. It is a medication that takes the place of conventional medicines. Complementary medicines can be used along with conventional medicines. Both Complementary and Alternative medicines are known under one umbrella called CAM. Alternative medications deals with spiritual, metaphysical and even some religious undertones. Alternative medicines started during  the ancient Chinese times as the only option for healing without doctor prescribed medications.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicines actually defines these practices as a group of diverse medical and health care system and practices that are not considered to be part of conventional medicines. They also define the integrative medicine as a combination of mainstream or conventional medical therapies and CAM therapies for a high quality of effective medicines.

Alternative medicines can help people if they believe they can help. Such forms of alternative medicines or treatments are Acupuncture, Herbalism, Aromatherapy, Holistic, Naturopathic and Homeopathic Medicines. These are just some of the most popular forms of treatment.   There are many religions out there that do not allow conventional medicines to be taken, so the alternative medication system comes into play from them. Whether the medicines work remains to be seen in the patient but it is proven over and over again that conventional medications should be taken in the case of some serious conditions such as cancer.

Acupuncture has been known to work on some people, by alleviating stress and pain in the body. Aromatherapy is said to help change the patients mood making them more relaxed and therefore more susceptible to the workings of the medications. People swear by both alternative treatments. You really have nothing to lose by trying them so, if you want to try a herbal remedy for a headache as opposed to aspirin, there is no harm in trying, the worst case is it won’t work. But thousands and thousands of people swear by it and maybe there is something to it.
