Diabetic neuropathy is damage to the nerves in people with diabetes.
The cause is decreased blood flow and high blood sugar levels. People
who do not control their blood sugar level run a very high risk of
developing diabetic neuropathy. It is estimated that 50% of people with
diabetes will eventually develop diabetic neuropathy.
The diabetic neuropathy is neuropathic disorders that become associated with diabetes mellitus. This type of condition results from a form of diabetic injury including the blood vessels that supply nerves. There are some common conditions that are associated with diabetic neuropathy; these are third nerve palsy, diabetic amyotrophic, autonomic neuropathy, and mononeuropathy and thoracoabdominal neuropathy.
It is not clear about the inner workings of the diabetic neuropathy and
that is why it is hard to make a definitive course of treatment. The
treatments only temporarily fix the problem not cure it. Some
treatments such as Tricylic Antidepressants or TCA’s and Serotonin
Reuptake Inhibitors or SSRI’s and Antiepileptic drugs or AED’s don’t
affect the problem they just help ease the pain of the problem.
Neuropathy is any type of disease that can affect the nervous system. The longer more technical tern is called Peripheral Neuropathy which is the disease of the peripheral nervous system. There are four different types of nerve damage; they are the polyneuropathy, autonomic neuropathy, mononeuropathy and mononeuritis multiplex. The most common is the disease of peripheral polyneuropathy, this order affects the feet and the legs. Certain types have different causes each one is not the same.
Neuropathic pain is not very easy to treat. Once you have the diagnosis
that you have a type of neuropathy then the doctor must decide on which
treatment will be best for you. There are treatments that only help
part of the pain such as an opioid analgesic. This form of treatment is
considered as temporary. Some of the treatments that are not regarded
as painkillers are very effective. They can work with another opioid or
they can work alone. Some of the combinations are with medications such
as Elavil, Neurontin, Lyrica and Cymbalta.
